Arnica Montana
Used in salves for pain relief caused by osteoarthritis, sore throat, surgery, and other conditions. Arnica is also used for bleeding, bruising, swelling after surgery, and other conditions. Arnica Montana is native to Europe, has long been used medicinally, but the effectiveness of this use has not been substantiated. Arnica montana contains the toxin helenalin, which can be poisonous if large amounts of the plant are eaten; contact with the plant can also cause skin irritation when in the field.
From the 10th century on, angelica was cultivated as a vegetable and medicinal plant, and achieved popularity in Scandinavia in the 12th century and is used especially in Sami culture. Angelica is a shamanic medicine among the Saami or Laplanders.
Archangelica comes from the Greek word "arkhangelos" (=arch-angel), due to the belief that it was the archangel Michael who told of its use as a medicine.
Angelica archangelica roots are among the most common botanical used in gin distillation, often used in concert with juniper berries and coriander as a chief aromatic characteristic for gin. They are also used in absinthe, aquavit, and bitters, in addition to culinary uses such as jams and omelettes.
