Assam tea is from a region in India that grows the Camellia Sinensis tea plant.  It's known for it's body, briskness, malty flavor, and strong, bright color. It's grown at sea level and it's one of the most widely produced and accepted teas in the world.  It's history dates back to the mid 1800's when it became widely distributed by the British East India Company, but since then it's been both commercially and privately grown.  It's one of the most highly caffeinated black teas out there and it's flavor and color makes it one of the favorites!
The term "Broken Orange Pekoe" is a grade of tea, where BOP is considered high grade and where "fannings and dust" is considered poor.
