I have been told this tastes just like what Shawarma should taste like. I guess I can take that off my bucket list!
For those who have never tried Shawarma, It's a middle eastern regional dish similar to Gyro but with different spices. There are several different meats (beef, lamb, chicken, pork) that are spiced, slow cooked all day on a rotisserie, sliced off and served on a either flat bread or wrapped in pitas. They are topped with everything from Tahini, or hummus or pickled turnips or Amba (pickled mango with chili sauce).
I tried this with lamb, and it was phenomenal!
I also tried in a pan with chicken, and served it on salad! (Lovely!)
See what you can make with this spice blend!
If you don't have time to slow roast a leg of lamb or beef, try this recipe!
To make oven roasted Shawarma chicken for family and friends, it so easy!!
Take Lemon or Lime juice, (about 1/8 cup or the juice of one fruit), 1/2 cup of vegetable oil and 1-2 tablespoons of Auntie Arwen's Around the corner Shawarma blend, mix in a medium to large ceramic bowl.
Take about 4 chicken breasts (1 per person) and place in the bowl with the marinade along with chopped onion. Toss well to coat and cover with plastic wrap. Chill for at least an hour.
In a greased deep dish pan, remove the chicken and onions from the marinade and arrange evenly in the pan. Bake in a preheated 425 degree oven for about 1/2 hour till just golden.
Remove from heat and let rest for about 5-7 minutes.
Serve with Pita, tzatziki sauce, hot sauce, cucumbers, fresh tomatoes, feta, olives of every desire, lettuce and mild rice...
It's so different but so delicious!
