Himalayan Balti Blend is a complex and flavorful blend that adds that exotic attitude towards vegetables and rice. The recipe comes from a central part of the Himalayan steppes, Katmandu, the crossroads of the silk road! Balti is actually translated as type of Wok. It's a quick cook and the flavors are extremely pronounced!
It's mostly for Vegetarian or vegan dishes but the recipes can include white meats.
Here is our quick Balti rice recipe for you to see just how easy it is to enjoy the flavors of the Silk Road!
In a wok or deep pan, combine 1 medium chopped onion and a dash of olive oil...cook till just transparent. Usually it takes only a few minutes.
Then add about 1-2 tablespoon of Auntie Arwen's Himalayan Balti blend and stir well. Sometimes I like to add 3 finely minced cloves of garlic just after the onions turn transparent.
Add in your usual 1" cubed Root vegetables, Parsnips, potatoes, carrots, and about 2 cups of Vegetable stock. Heat and bring to a low boil for about 10 minutes.
you can then add chopped Roma tomatoes, cauliflower, broccoli florets, or green beans or chick peas... any or all of the combination of these.
Let that simmer for at least 5 more minutes till the root vegetables are tender.
You can serve it over rice, with naan bread, with yogurt or coconut... it's your Balti!
