Arnica Montana native to Europe, has long been used medicinally, but the effectiveness of this use has not been substantiated.
Arnica montana contains the toxin helenalin, which can be poisonous if large amounts of the plant are eaten, and contact with the plant can also cause skin irritation when in the field.
The flowers of the plant are used in medicine. Arnica is most commonly used for pain caused by osteoarthritis, sore throat, surgery, and other conditions. Arnica is also used for bleeding, bruising, swelling after surgery, and other conditions, but there is no good scientific evidence to support these uses. It's mostly used in Homeopathic practices and has been used historically for centuries.
