Called "kvann" in Norway, this herb has been very highly valued since antiquity. It was supposed to ward off the plague and evil spirits, grant long life, and the candied stalks are delicious in trifle and other desserts. It is rich in Vitamin C, which was valuable in to folks in the north, who had few other sources of this crucial vitamin. Angelica is also a flavorant in Chartreuse, Benedictine, and many other liqueurs. It stimulates the digestion, and eases digestive problems. Stay out of the sun if taking this, and do not take if you’re pregnant.
